Fall is a beautiful time of year. It’s a time to softly unwind from the business summer brings and a chance to reflect and renew. I’m not one for New Year’s resolutions, but I often find myself making Fall resolutions. I bring myself in the kitchen more preparing nourishing, soul-warming foods. I become more organized. I tend to declutter and I feel I can get back into focusing on me. As parents, we sacrifice a lot for our kids as we should, but when we show up and do more for ourselves, we are oftentimes better at showing up for our families as well. Below I share 6 tips on how to renew yourself and change the color of your own personal beautiful leaves for a new season altogether.
Exercise. I’ll be honest. I hate to exercise, but I love how I feel after I motivate myself to do it. My favorite is a good HIIT (high intensity interval training) workout. Jillian Michaels is my girl for this. Working out at home is my preference, but it’s important to find what motivates you, makes you thrive and helps you want to come back for more. HIIT can range from 20 to 30 minutes and the most beneficial part of these workouts is that you’ll continue to burn calories even after you’re done working out.
Yoga & Meditation. I’m picky about these. I say this in the most respectful way possible. There can be some different apps and videos for these. I’m not about “finding my 3rd eye” so when instructors start to talk about this I zone out and find the Holy Spirit within and the good Lord above! If that’s your jam then go for it! I’m more for a good yoga stretch just to release and bring things down on days I’m not doing HIIT. The same goes for meditation. Headspace is a great, down-to-earth app that I love. It covers the basics with a free trial and you can subscribe for an affordable rate after that if you enjoy it. Meditation is great for lowering cortisol levels, which is a stress hormone and can potentially cause other hormones to become imbalanced if you don’t nourish it. You only need 5 minutes a day a few days a week.
Declutter. It’s amazing how good it feels to throw things out or donate items. I’m much more efficient when I have a clean workspace. When I rid my home of the old and bring in a few new things, the sense of feeling lighter is one that can’t be beat. Go through your closets, junk drawers, cabinets and get rid of anything you haven’t used in the last year.
Journal. A gratitude journal or something called “morning pages” is a good start. With a gratitude journal you write down a positive affirmation for the day, 3 things you’re grateful for, and 3 things that would make your day great. That evening you come back and write down 3 amazing things that happened that day and how you could have made your day even better. I’ll be honest, I find this very hard to do on a daily basis so if you can get it in a few times a week I think you’ll notice a difference. Carving out time and space to connect with your intuition is a great way to create a positive mindset. Morning pages was penned by Julia Cameron. Google her. She’s fun. This is waking up first thing in the morning and writing down any and everything that comes to your mind. This can be a good tool for anything ranging from parenting to career to finding your inner creative genius. You’ll be amazed by what you discover when you dig deep and write your thoughts down. Your thoughts and pen will begin to flow and a sense of self-discovery is waiting on the other end.
Get in the kitchen. I love the food brought by this time of year. Stews, chilis, pumpkin everything and crockpot delights. Need I say more? Baking pumpkin cookies, breads or muffins are a seasonal favorite and placing a warm, nourishing meal on the table for family is second to none.
Treat yourself. It’s okay to stop. In a world where being busy has become somewhat of a trend, I call BS on that one. Take a moment. Relax by a fire with a good book and glass of wine, cup of tea, or whatever your choice of hygge might be. Go on a date with your husband. Get together with a good friend. Book a massage. Take a bubble bath. Light a candle that calms your senses or takes you back to a happy place. Whatever it is that helps you reconnect and breathe, do it and don’t feel guilty!
What does the Fall season bring for you? There is no wrong or right, but tips and new insights are always helpful for all. I hope these help and I wish you a happy first day of Fall!!
